S+7

The poems, on her bison, appendectomy and detention are products of the famous S+7 method developed by the esteemed Oulipo group. In this method, the substantives (nouns) in a given text (poems, in this case) are systematically replaced by those found seven places further along in a dictionary.

The resultant works may often usefully combine the gravitas of classical poetry with the obscurantism of much contemporary verse.

The first two poems were recited before a slightly foxed audience at the Bonnington Centre on the 22nd of December, 2003. Detention was among a batch of these poems recited years ago during gigs with The Blowpipes, some being set to music. The orginal authors' names and titles have unfortunately been mislaid.
